Four State CVEB Meeting Minutes

March 30th, 2018

Hospice of the Panhandle

 

Meeting facilitators: Sam Rock, Co-chair and Kenneth Hawthorne, Co-Communications Liasion.

Call to Order:

Pledge of Allegiance (Led by Samuel Rock- Co-Chair)

Introduction of New Members (Led by Samuel Rock- Co-Chair)

George Vukovich was recognized by the officers of the board for his time served as Co-Chair and founding member of the Four State CVEB. He was presented with a certificate and engraved the item

Old Business:

  • Voting for Co-Chair was held
  • 17 votes for Jamila Jones-Fleet, 8 votes for Dan Campbell
  • Jamila was voted in as Co-Chair

 

A moment of silence was held in memory of Four State CVEB member John Palmer

 

Guest Speakers:

  • Susan “Denise” Abott: Homeless Program Liaison, Martinsburg VAMC
  • Michelle Cooke introduced Continuum of Care Staff and VA Homeless staff in attendance
  • Rochelle Baltimore-Swan spoke on the HUD-VASH program and the statistics, “a total of 172 HUD/VASH vouchers to be counted for FY18—currently, 163 Veterans are housed and case-managed in this program, 95% housed”
  • Lindsey Russo gave a Homeless to Housed Story
  • Shared Homeless Measures for FYTD 2018
  • Spoke on the engagement with local CoC (Continuum of Care); meets are held regularly to review referrals and go over a “by name list”

Tom Peters and Lea Doherty: SSVF and Eastern Pennsylvania Continuum of Care

  • Initiative to make homelessness “rare, brief and non-reoccurring?”
  • Last year’s PIT (Point in Time) Count*, 139 homeless in Fulton and Franklin Co (Counties covered by the COC in Martinsburg VAMC Catchment area)

  • Jill Finkle: Suicide Prevention
  • Presented facts on Veteran suicide, 18% of deaths by suicide among the U.S. were veterans
  • Definition of suicide is someone who is wanting to die
  • Presented on myths vs. realities
  • Death by suicide IS preventable
    • Suicide prevention team can provide gun locks
  • SAVE:
    • S: Signs of suicidal thinking should be recognized
    • A: Ask the most important question of all
    • V: Validate the Veteran’s experience
    • E: Encourage treatment, and Expedite getting help.

  • VA Suicide Prevention Coordinators
    • Each VA Medical Center has a Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC)
      to make sure Veterans receive needed counseling and services.
    • Find your local SPC at VeteransCrisisLine.net/ResourceLocator
  • Suicide prevention group that meets on Mondays @ 9 AM; no appointment required– they can walk-in to the Hope Center
  • Vet Centers can provide assistance to the community; to find a Vet Center closest to you visit www.vetcenter.gov

George Vukovich encouraged board members to refer to Suicide Prevention coordinators and get help- do not sit back and do nothing or try to handle it on your own

  • Veterans Day Parade:
  • Thomas Smith from American Legion Riders had a sign-up sheet for volunteers
  • Plan for this year is to do it at the Martinsburg VAMC because the cost to do it in Martinsburg may be too high

  • Anna Stead recognized Danielle Clum, Chris Basch and Jamila Jones-Fleet for their excellent services provided to veterans at the Medical Center
  • Julianna Albowicz from Senator VanHollen spoke on their initiatives for a Veterans Treatment Court
